A
Scenic Tract
David S. Rose, North Branford, has donated a scenic little piece
of salt meadow along Leetes Island Road to the Land Trust. Located
along the eastern bank of the Ogicomook Creek, it runs along
Leetes Island Road, ending across from Saw Mill Road.
The Rose family has held the land for generations, and Mr. Rose
tells of the harvesting of salt hay by oxen and horses. The
hay was used as mulch by the Rose Orchard Farm, as salt meadow
cord-grass (Spartina patens) is prized as a weed-free mulch.
The Land Trust is especially grateful for this gift as it fills
a gap which separated two of our Palmer-Welles pieces donated
last year, thus allowing for ownership of 700 continuous feet
along Leetes Island Road.
When you visit Rose Orchards on Route 139, be sure to thank
Mrs. Rose for her husband's donation, a gift which will help
the Trust protect the scenic qualities of our town. |
